Tsuruhachi and Tsurujiro

Tsurujiro sings folk songs. Tsuruhachi works with him. She plays the shamisen. The two perform together. Audiences take to them. Off the stage they do not get on. Tsurujiro is forever finding fault. What he picks at is her playing. The friction grows and in the end they part. Tsuruhachi marries a patron of hers. Time passes. One day they appear on the same stage again, and something shifts after that performance, since she comes to feel the music matters more than the marriage. Kazuo Hasegawa, Isuzu Yamada, Kamatari Fujiwara and Masao Mishima appear in the eighty eight minute film, set in the Taisho period, a Japanese production Mikio Naruse finished in 1938.
