Tully

Tully Jr and his brother Earl live on their father's ranch in Nebraska. Both are proud and both believe they need nobody. Earl is shy and keeps to himself; Tully moves from one short affair to the next. Then Ella, a friend from childhood, comes back to town as a vet and Tully becomes attached to her. The townspeople do not think much of his chances. Hilary Birmingham's film is quiet and slow; it is interested less in events than in the things left unsaid between two brothers. The future of the ranch, what the father is keeping back and the absence of the mother all sit under the story. The telling neither romanticises the countryside nor looks down on it. Anson Mount plays Tully and Julianne Nicholson plays Ella. It is one of the quiet examples of American independent cinema.
