Asa finishes his service in the Russian navy and comes back to the Kazakh steppe, to his sister's nomadic family. He wants a flock of his own and a life as a shepherd, but the rule is fixed: to have a flock you have to be married. The only eligible girl for miles around is Tulpan. Asa goes to ask for her, and Tulpan refuses him from behind a curtain, because his ears are too big. Sergey Dvortsevoy's film won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes in 2008. He came from documentary, and shot scenes like the birth of a lamb for real, without cutting away. The wind, the dust and the emptiness of the steppe are the film's actual lead.
