Bread Day

The documentary follows a community outside Saint Petersburg. The community is made up of pensioners. They live in something close to complete isolation. The same work is repeated every week. The bread delivery does not come to the village. The bread is left at a railway junction two hours away. The villagers have to fetch it from there and bring it in. The journey there and back is the whole of the work. What is brought is then distributed in the village. The film records that weekly ritual from beginning to end. The way is long and the work is heavy. Fetching the bread is the village’s fixed task of the week. Sergei Dvortsevoy’s Russian documentary of 1998 runs fifty five minutes.
