What Tunnel Warfare Is About
During the Second Sino-Japanese War a small town defends itself by digging beneath its own streets. Directed by the Communist Party, the villagers open tunnels that link one settlement to the next until the whole district sits on a network, and in the film’s telling that network is what wins the war. The provenance is not hidden: it was made by the August First Film Studio, the studio of the People’s Liberation Army, as an openly instructional and openly propagandistic picture. Despite that, or because of it, it sold more than three hundred million tickets in China and remained the most watched film in the country until the 1980s. Ren Xudong directed and co-wrote with Pan Yunshan.
