What Unicorn Wars Is About
Alberto Vázquez animates a holy war between cuddly teddy bears and unicorns, and stages it as a military training film: barracks, drill sergeant, sacred text, raw recruits, then blood. The design is deliberately childlike and the violence is not, and the whole tension of the picture lives in that gap. At the centre are two brothers, one raised in the other's shadow, and the war hands them permission to do what they could never do at home. Fascism, religion and sibling envy all go into the same pot. It was completed in 2022 as a Spanish and French co-production. Who it is for: viewers who like severe adult animation and allegory. Who it is not for: anyone who takes the character design at face value, because this is its exact opposite.
