What Twelve Nights Is About
Aubrey Lam's film tells a relationship in twelve nights, not consecutive but spread across months, each falling at a different stage. What begins as interest passes through curiosity, habit, resentment and tension, and arrives at indifference. The idea behind it is that this cycle repeats: nobody makes any particular mistake, the relationship simply follows its own course. It keeps a deliberate distance from the usual optimism of Hong Kong romantic comedy. Eason Chan and Cecilia Cheung carry the widening distance between the two in the quiet scenes. The structure also lets the audience keep its own running account of what is happening.
