What Twenty Days Without War Is About

In the winter of 1942, Major Lopatin, a war correspondent, is given twenty days of leave. He travels to distant Tashkent to hand a dead comrade's belongings to the man's family. There are no bombs there, no sirens; but the war has soaked into the city anyway. Lopatin runs into his former wife, sits through a meeting of factory workers, and edges into a wary closeness with a lonely woman working on the film being made from his own dispatches. Aleksei German is filming the gap between what the front knows and what the rear is being told. Built on Konstantin Simonov's semi-autobiographical writing, it stages no heroism and simply looks at tired faces. Yuri Nikulin, beloved as a circus clown and comic actor, plays entirely against that. The film ran into the censors and its release was held up.
