What Two Acres of Land Is About
A landlord wants to clear the peasants off his land and build a factory, and Shambu's two acres are exactly in the way. An old debt is produced, and the court gives him two months to find a sum he cannot possibly find. He and his son go to the slums of Calcutta, where he starts pulling a rickshaw. Bimal Roy made the film after seeing Bicycle Thieves, drawing directly on Italian neorealism. Balraj Sahni's performance is among the most remembered in Indian cinema.
