Devdas

Devdas and Paro grow up next door to each other in the same village. As the years pass what is between them turns into love, but the class difference between the two families does not allow it. Devdas can neither stand up to his family nor let Paro go. He leaves for the city and gives himself over to drink there. A woman named Chandramukhi comes to know him and does what she can. Bimal Roy adapted the film from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1917 novel. The telling neither glorifies Devdas nor blames him easily; his collapse looks less like a romantic fate than like the sum of decisions never taken. Dilip Kumar's performance is quiet and turned inward. Suchitra Sen entered Hindi cinema with this film, and Vyjayanthimala played her first dramatic role in it.
