Two-Lane Blacktop

Two men cross America eastward in a fifty-five Chevrolet, racing for money. James Taylor plays the driver and Dennis Wilson, the Beach Boys drummer, the mechanic; neither had acted before and the characters do not even have names. On the road they meet the man in the GTO, played by Warren Oates, who invents a new life story for himself at every stop, and they agree to a race. The idea is that the race never matters. Monte Hellman empties the narrative deliberately; the dialogue is technical, the people cannot connect, and the destination loses meaning. The highway is not a goal but a habit. Critics supported the film strongly and it collapsed at the box office, which placed Hellman among cult figures rather than among major directors. It now counts among the best American road movies. Who it is for: viewers who like seventies American independent film and existential road movies. Who it is not for: anyone wanting racing excitement or character development, both of which the film withholds on purpose.
