Two Women

The film follows the lives of two women studying architecture from the first turbulent years of the Islamic Republic onwards. Both are able students with a future in front of them, but the obstacles they meet come not from the school but from home and from society. One of them is caught first by a man who follows her and then inside a marriage. The film showed domestic violence directly, and because it was a subject long left unspoken, that made a considerable stir in Iran. The account moves by comparing the two women; the lives of two people who sat in the same classroom diverge exactly as far as their families allow. Niki Karimi plays the lead in Tahmine Milani’s ninety nine minute Iranian film, completed in 1999.
