Tying the Knot

The documentary takes up a debate in America. The subject is marriage between same sex couples. The film runs through two real cases. In one there is a police officer called Lois. The woman is killed in the line of duty. Her partner of thirteen years, Mickie, is left behind. The department accepts the relationship but will not release the pension. In the second case there is a rancher in Oklahoma. After he loses his partner a case is brought over the will. The cousins of the dead man bring it and seek to put him out of the house. The documentary also gives the opposing arguments. The answers made to those arguments are in the film as well. Archive footage shows the history of the debate. Statements by politicians are used too. Jim de Sève directed the eighty one minute documentary, in which Mary Bonauto also appears. The American production was finished in 2004.
