What U2 3D Is About
A concert film from U2's Vertigo tour, but the point of it is the format: the first live action feature shot in digital 3D. The footage was gathered across several nights at the River Plate stadium in Buenos Aires in February 2006, using nine pairs of Sony CineAlta cameras, then cut together as though it were one show. Fourteen songs. Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington direct it together, and it premiered at Sundance at the start of 2008. The depth is used less as a trick than as a way of deleting distance: the crowd stays inside the frame, the stage comes forward. It cost fifteen million dollars and took more than twenty six at the box office.
