What Uncle Tom Is About
The documentary is built from long interviews with a set of people identified in the United States as Black conservatives. What they say converges on one complaint: that Black voters are treated as belonging to a single political line, and that anyone stepping outside it is accused of betrayal. The film's title comes directly from that accusation. Justin Malone's film is openly partisan and makes no secret of it; it gives no floor to the position it argues against. It was argued about fiercely on release in the United States: supporters said a voice nobody hears in public had finally been given room, while critics wrote that it skips over historical context and structural inequality. What it leaves out became as much a part of the argument as what it says.
