What Under the North Star Is About
Starting from the end of the nineteenth century, the film follows the Koskela family, tenant farmers in the village of Pentinkulma in southern Hame. Jussi Koskela cleared his fields out of raw bog with his own hands, but the parsonage wants a large part of that land for itself. His son Akseli will not accept the obedient role his betters expect of him; new ideas set him thinking about freedom and about owning land of his own. From there the account reaches out to inequality, to the rise of the labour movement, to Finnish independence and to the civil war. It was adapted from the novel by Vaino Linna. Ilkka Koivula plays the lead in Timo Koivusalo’s hundred and ninety three minute Finnish film, completed in 2009.
