Vaanam

In one city on one day, five people who do not know each other end up in the same place. A cable thief is in debt and lies to the girl he loves. A musician is trying to get into a large company. A woman is living a life she did not choose. A Muslim family is looking for a missing son. A villager brings his sick wife to hospital. Each has a different reason to be there, and in the evening an armed group takes hostages at the hospital. Krish writes and directs. Silambarasan, Bharath, Anushka Shetty, Prakash Raj and Saranya Ponvannan take the leads. The music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja and the photography by Nirav Shah. The film is a remake of Krish's own Telugu film Vedam, which starred Allu Arjun, Manchu Manoj and Anushka Shetty. Anushka Shetty appears in both versions. The idea for the remake came from watching: Silambarasan and the producer VTV Ganesh saw Vedam at a cinema in Chennai and went to the director to ask him to make the Tamil version. It is Krish's first work in Tamil cinema. The narrative builds its five strands separately and joins them in a single event at the end, a structure common in Indian cinema of the period. The matter it works at is class; none of the five come from the same place and the narrative sets that out plainly. Who it is for: viewers who like multi strand Indian drama and Silambarasan. Who it is not for: the running time is long, some strands are weak, and the closing section leans on melodrama.
