What Vaayai Moodi Pesavum Is About
Balaji Mohan's 2014 Tamil film follows a strange epidemic in a hill town: anyone who speaks falls ill, and the authorities ban speaking. The town sinks into silence and people have to find other ways to say what they could not say to each other. The idea is that speech is often not communication: once the ban is in force, relationships improve unexpectedly. Balaji Mohan keeps it as light comedy without turning it into allegory. The rapport between Dulquer Salmaan and Nazriya Nazim works. Its weakness is the idea running out in the second half and the story returning to its template. The photography is fine. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil romantic comedy and unusual premises. Who it's not for: anyone wanting consistent logic, or who will not find the idea enough on its own.
