Vanaja

Vanaja is a fifteen year old girl in a village in South India. She wants to learn Kuchipudi dance. To that end she goes to work in the house of the local landlady. At first things seem to be going well. What starts between her and the landlady’s son ends badly. After that Vanaja finds herself up against the caste order. The difference in power meets her at every step. The film tells it without building big scenes. What it stays with is the ordinary work of the household. Urmila Dammannagari is also in the cast. Mamatha Bhukya takes the lead in Rajnesh Domalpalli’s Telugu film of 2006.
