What Vanya on 42nd Street Is About

A group of actors arrive at a derelict theatre in Manhattan, catch up with each other about ordinary things, and then, with no warning, begin performing Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. There are no costumes, no set and the stage is unusable, and within a few minutes none of that registers and you are in Russia. Louis Malle filmed this rehearsal with a company that had been working for years without an audience, from David Mamet's adaptation. It was Malle's last film. He and Wallace Shawn had made My Dinner with Andre together before this.
