Varalaru

K. S. Ravikumar's 2006 Tamil film follows the relationship between Shiva, a businessman confined to a wheelchair, and his son Vishnu. One day Vishnu begins behaving as though his character has changed and gets into affairs that shame his father. The explanation comes late and turns the narrative into a reckoning between two generations. At the centre is what the father did in the past and the question of who paid for it. Ajith Kumar plays three separate roles and that is what the film is known for. Asin and Kaniha play opposite him. The narrative follows the commercial Tamil pattern; song sequences and action scenes take wide space and the emotional emphasis is made openly. Who it's for: those who like commercial Tamil drama of the two thousands. Who it's not for: viewers expecting restraint; the film is generous with both its emotional steering and its running time.
