What Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape Is About
Jake West's 2010 documentary covers the censorship dispute that broke out in Britain in the eighties over video cassettes. When home video first spread, no law covered tapes; the press and pressure groups that noticed the gap produced a moral panic in short order. What is interesting is that the film shows the argument was not about the films. Most of those doing the accusing had not watched most of the titles on the banned list; the real issue was the existence of an unregulated distribution channel. The process ended in the video legislation of 1984. West combines news footage of the period, prosecution records and interviews with both directors and academics. The tone is openly anti-censorship and does not hide it. Who it's for: those interested in the history of horror cinema and censorship debates. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a neutral presentation; the documentary takes its position openly.
