What Violet Perfume: Nobody Hears You Is About
Yessica is a rebellious girl who forms an improbable friendship at school with the quiet Miriam. Miriam lives with her mother in a calm house; Yessica lives with a violent stepfather and a stepbrother, Jorge, who recognises no limits whatsoever. What Jorge arranges destroys the bond between the two girls as well. Filmed in Mexico by Maryse Sistach, it shows how poverty and violence pull children away from each other without dressing any of it up, and keeps the camera at the girls’ eye level throughout. Hard to watch, and unwilling to soften its gaze.
