What Waiter Is About
Edgar is a waiter at a restaurant called Het Westen. He is married and he also has a lover. His neighbours make his life a misery with loud music and rubbish. His wife is ill, his lover is unsettled, the customers are rude. One day he has had enough and does the only thing available to him: he goes to see his creator. That is, he sits down at the desk of the writer who is scripting the film, asks why his life is like this, and demands changes. Alex van Warmerdam directs and plays Edgar himself. He is one of the more singular figures in Dutch cinema. A character negotiating with his author takes the film out of comedy and somewhere else; the screenwriter, though, has troubles of his own.
