Alex van Warmerdam’s 1998 film comes from his own stage play, and he directs it, writes the music and plays the lead. Keet lives on a farm with Brand, who cannot read; in the evenings she reads the television subtitles aloud to him. What Keet wants is a child, so she brings Lena, a tutor from the city, into the house to teach him, and then actively encourages the affair that starts between them. The plan works, which is the problem: once Lena has a baby the order of the household has changed, and Keet is the one who has slipped to second place. Annet Malherbe was nominated for a European Film Award for it.
