What Walking Across Egypt Is About
Mattie Rigsbee, an elderly widow living alone in the South, is beginning, unwillingly, to accept that she can no longer do everything herself. When she becomes friends with Lamar, the town dogcatcher, she meets his nephew Wesley; the boy is an orphan, has been convicted of stealing cars and no one will give him a chance. Mattie sees something in him and tries to change his course by letting him stay in her house. The film is about what the two of them give each other and how old age and youth get along in the same house. Arthur Allan Seidelman’s hundred minute American film was adapted from Clyde Edgerton’s novel; Ellen Burstyn plays Mattie, Jonathan Taylor Thomas plays Wesley and Mark Hamill plays Lamar. It opened on 17 December 1999.
