War Pony

The Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, one of the poorest places in America. The film runs the stories of two Oglala Lakota alongside each other. Bill is twenty-three with two children, looking for a way to make money: he tries breeding and selling poodles, he takes work with a white farmer. Matho is twelve and wants to prove himself to his father. The two never meet. What each is after is the same: somewhere to belong and a way to stand on his own feet. Riley Keough and Gina Gammell direct; a hundred and fourteen minutes. They wrote it with two people from the reservation, Bill Reddy and Franklin Sioux Bob, and the cast was found at Pine Ridge. It won the Caméra d'Or for a first feature at Cannes in 2022.
