What War Requiem Is About
Derek Jarman turned Benjamin Britten’s work, which sets the Latin requiem mass against Wilfred Owen’s First World War poetry, into a stream of images. There is not a line of dialogue in it; all we hear is the music, and what we see are scenes of a soldier at the front, the nurse he loves, and the war itself. An old veteran in a wheelchair remembers all of it. This was Laurence Olivier’s last appearance on screen, with Tilda Swinton as the nurse. Not a narrative but a lament: it does not describe the war, it mourns it, and softens nothing.
