The first half of a two-film work; the full Taiwanese version runs four and a half hours, and there is also a shortened single-piece international cut. The Seediq, one of Taiwan's indigenous peoples, are losing their forests, their language and their customs under Japanese colonial rule. In 1930 they rise, led by Mona Rudao. Wei Te-sheng directed; a hundred and forty-four minutes. The film does not present the Seediq only as victims: they kill Japanese civilians at a school sports meeting, women and children among them. The violence is severe.
