What Wasted Youth Is About

1981, Munich. Harry works as a trainee at a bank, but what he really cares about is managing the band his friends have put together. The band is called Apollo Schwabing. Harry manages to get them on as the opening act at a big concert. Three things happen at once that summer: music, friendship, and the first real disappointments. Benjamin Quabeck's German film takes the world of the early-1980s New German Wave as its subject. Tom Schilling and Robert Stadlober take the leads. The telling does not present the period as some great revolution; it shows that most of these young people did not really know what they were doing. Music is the film's main material, and real tracks of the period are used.
