What Water Lilies by Monet Is About
The documentary tells Claude Monet’s paintings together with their geography. It runs down the Seine from Le Havre to Paris, then follows the river back up and stops at Argenteuil, Poissy, Vétheuil and Giverny; which light the painter was after in which place becomes visible that way. It stands before the canvases in the Orangerie, the Marmottan and the Orsay and describes how they were made, and comes at last to the house and garden at Giverny. At the centre are the water lily panels he worked on for years while his eyesight was failing. Giovanni Troilo’s ninety four minute Italian production also uses the correspondence between Georges Clemenceau and Monet; it was completed in 2018.
