What We Could Be King Is About
When a budget crisis closes thirty seven schools in Philadelphia, Germantown and Martin Luther King, rivals for forty years, are merged, and the football teams of the two schools have to become one. A head coach of twenty seven, in the job for the first time, and a new principal try to keep on the same field boys who have taken each other for enemies for years. The documentary follows one season; the question is less about winning games than about whether young people whose neighbourhood has been broken up can hold together. The camera goes into the homes, the corridors and the empty classrooms of the closed school as well as the training ground. Judd Ehrlich’s seventy five minute American documentary was completed in 2014.
