What Wedding in Malinovka Is About
In a Ukrainian village during the Russian Civil War, power changes hands almost daily, and the villagers wake up not knowing who is in charge that morning. Gritsian Tavrichesky, a local turned warlord, rides into Malinovka with his band and decides he wants Yarinka, a girl from the village. She and her betrothed, Andreyka, go to the Bolshevik commander for help, and the plan he comes back with is a strange one: Yarinka is to marry Gritsian in a wedding that is not real. Andrei Tutyshkin adapted it from Boris Alexandrov's operetta, it runs on its songs, and it sold more than 74 million tickets in the Soviet Union. The propaganda is not subtle, but Russian speakers still quote its lines from memory.
