What Welcome to the Quiet Room Is About
Matsuo Suzuki directed this and adapted it from his own novel. Asuka, a freelance writer, comes out of a two day blackout in the closed ward of a psychiatric hospital; she did not check herself in, someone close to her did. What the film manages is to treat that ward as neither a nightmare set nor a metaphor: a gifted pianist with an eating disorder, a former adult film actress, women who have built their own routines inside the place, each of them stays a person rather than a diagnosis. It keeps an unusual distance between comedy and seriousness, finding laughs without mocking anyone. Yuki Uchida is at the centre, with Yu Aoi and Shinobu Otake alongside her.
