What Price Glory

Quirt and Flagg are sergeants in the Marines. They have been at odds for years. What they fall out over is usually women. It went that way in China and in the Philippines. In 1917 the war brings them to France. Flagg is a captain by then. He meets Charmaine at an inn, the innkeeper’s daughter. Then Quirt turns up in the same place and the old rivalry starts again. The conditions at the front get in the way of it, and the hardness of the war pushes the two of them onto the same side. The story comes from a play by Maxwell Anderson and Laurence Stallings. The film was shot silent, with music and effects added by the Movietone system. There is no spoken dialogue, yet it counts as the first sound film Fox released. Victor McLaglen, Edmund Lowe and Dolores del Río appear in the hundred and twenty one minute film, an American production Raoul Walsh finished in 1926.
