What What We Did on Our Holiday Is About
A couple on the point of separating travel to Scotland with their three children for the birthday of a grandfather who is dying. The children must not find out about the separation. The first half is a familiar family comedy. Then an unexpected event changes the narrative entirely, and the film's real subject becomes how much more practically children handle death than adults. That turn is its bravest quality. Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin wrote and directed it together, having worked the same idea in a television series. David Tennant, Rosamund Pike and Billy Connolly are in the cast. Before watching: it was marketed as a light comedy, but its second half is directly about death and grief. Bear that in mind if you are watching with young children.
