What Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth? Is About
Made during Yasujirō Ozu's silent period, this film opens with a group of university friends. When his father dies, Tetsuo takes over the family's profitable company and bends the system to get three of his old classmates hired. At first this looks like an act of friendship. Then the same friends become his subordinates and the equality between them quietly breaks down, especially once the woman all four of them like enters the picture. Ozu keeps the comedy going while the question underneath stays serious: can work and friendship occupy the same room? Kinuyo Tanaka is in the cast. The stillness of his later films is not here yet and the pace is livelier.
