What Where the Lilies Bloom Is About
A group of siblings living in the remote backwoods of North Carolina decide to tell nobody that their father has died and to live on their own. If the state learns they are alone they will be broken up and placed in separate foster homes. What follows is the daily order kept up to protect the secret: finding money, keeping the neighbours at a distance and appearing to go on with school. The film does not idealise the children’s solidarity; it shows the tension among them as well. The account does not cover poverty over with the beauty of the countryside. Julie Gholson and Harry Dean Stanton appear in William A. Graham’s ninety eight minute American film, completed in 1974.
