Eliana De Santis What While There's War There's Hope Is About
Pietro Chiocca describes himself as a businessman in international trade. His family live comfortably in Rome: the villa, the car, the private school. Nobody at home knows precisely that what he sells is weapons and that his customers are countries at war. Then the business is exposed and he considers giving it up. His family have no intention whatsoever of giving up that standard of living. Alberto Sordi both directs and takes the lead. It is one of his satires on the Italian character, and past a certain point the comedy stops entirely. Its final scene is remembered as one of the harshest endings in Italian cinema.
