Julie Brochorst Andersen What While We Live Is About
In northern Denmark the lives of four people are tied together by a tragic accident. The film draws on real events, and what it is really about is not the accident but what each of them does afterwards with the share of it that falls to them: guilt, anger, the possibility of forgiveness, and the fact that none of these arrive in any sensible order. It is Mehdi Avaz's first feature. The narration moves between four points of view and does not raise any of them above the others. It keeps material that could easily slide into melodrama measured for most of its length, and the performances hold that measure too.
