What White Dog Is About
A young woman takes in a white dog she finds on the road and works out that it has been trained to attack certain people. Samuel Fuller does not turn this into a thriller. His question is whether a taught hatred can be undone, and if so who has any business attempting it. The man who tries to recondition the animal supplies the film's moral centre, and his persistence is never comforting. Rather than converting racism into a safe metaphor, it keeps the subject in an unpleasant literal place. The studio kept it off screens for a long time, so it was discussed more than seen.
