Who You Think I Am

Claire is a literature professor in her fifties. When things go wrong with the much younger Ludo, she starts following his friend Alex on social media, and from a fake account she writes to him as Clara, aged twenty four. Alex falls in love. He wants to meet, and she has to invent a new reason every time. The film's smartest move is to tell all of it through sessions with a therapist, which leaves the narrator's own interest in the story permanently visible and keeps you unsure which parts actually happened. Juliette Binoche plays a woman who knows perfectly well that what she is losing is not youth but visibility. The source is Camille Laurens's 2016 novel. It screened at the Berlin film festival in 2019. Its flaw is that it keeps adding layers toward the end, until the narrative game starts crowding out the feeling underneath it. Who it is for: psychological drama about identity and age. Who it is not for: viewers who want firm ground under the story.
