Wig

The documentary approaches the art of drag through Wigstock, a long standing New York institution. The performers gathered around the festival, which was born in the East Village, tell their own stories alongside the work they do on stage. How queerness, art and identity are talked about today comes directly out of those scenes. The film treats drag not as entertainment but as a way a community writes its own history, and the labour behind the costume and the make up becomes visible as well. It is also clear that years of accumulated work stand behind every act on that stage. Joey Arias, Kevin Aviance and Jackie Beat appear in Chris Moukarbel’s eighty nine minute American documentary, completed in 2019.
