What Wild Flower Is About

In a village in central Mexico at the start of the twentieth century, José Luis, the son of the landowner, secretly marries Esperanza, a peasant woman. When he goes over to the revolution his father disowns him, and she does not leave his side. Emilio Fernández reads the marriage and the revolution as the same event: a son breaking out of his own class, and a woman who stays. The film counts as a founding work of the golden age of Mexican cinema, because it is where Fernández, the cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, the writer Mauricio Magdaleno, Dolores del Río and Pedro Armendáriz first worked together. It was del Río’s first Mexican film after Hollywood.
