What Pueblerina Is About
Aurelio comes out of prison and returns to his town. He served the sentence for taking revenge on the man who raped Paloma, the woman he loves. He arrives to find his mother dead and Paloma living outside the town, shut out, with the son the rape produced. The two marry and start working the land, and the local landowners, the Gonzalez brothers, refuse to let it stand. Emilio Fernandez's 1949 film shows plainly an order in which the punishment falls on the woman rather than on the man. Gabriel Figueroa shot it. The film competed at Cannes in 1949, and Figueroa took cinematography prizes at both the Ariel awards and Karlovy Vary.
