What Salon Mexico Is About
Mercedes works at a dance hall in Mexico City and sends what she earns to pay for her younger sister's boarding school. The sister does not know what her work is. Mercedes wins a dance contest together with Paco, but he refuses to share the prize with her. The account between them keeps growing against her. Emilio Fernández's film is among the best known works of the golden age of Mexican cinema. It uses the shape of the cabaret melodrama but does not blame the woman; it does not glorify her sacrifice either, it shows what it costs her. Marga López takes the lead. The hall takes its name from a real place, and the dance sequences stand as a record of city life in that period.
