What Will Penny Is About
Will Penny is an ageing cowhand: he cannot read, he has saved nothing, and all he has is the work he can do. He takes a job riding the line for a ranch and finds his cabin occupied by a woman and her son, squatters after the guide who was to take them to Oregon abandoned them. With winter closing in he will not turn them out, and they agree to share until the thaw. Charlton Heston called this his own favourite of his films. Tom Gries directed; Donald Pleasence and Bruce Dern play the villains. A western that takes apart the cowboy legend and refuses the ending you expect.
