Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?

Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? is adapted from George Axelrod's Broadway play of the same name, which made Jayne Mansfield a star in 1955 and earned her a Theatre World Award for the role. 20th Century-Fox bought the film rights so Mansfield could reprise the role on screen and brought in Frank Tashlin, a former animator, to direct; Tashlin was known for bringing cartoon logic to live action with an exaggerated, caricatured style, and he built this film as a satire of advertising and consumer culture. Sources describe it as Tashlin's own favorite and generally considered his best film. Who it's for: anyone curious about a 1950s comedy that brings a former animator's cartoon logic to live action while satirizing advertising. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a restrained, realistic style, since the film is deliberately exaggerated and caricatured.
