What Window Horses: The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming Is About
Rosie Ming is a young poet of Chinese and Iranian parentage living in Vancouver with over-protective Chinese grandparents. She is invited to a poetry festival in Shiraz, in Iran, though what she really wants is Paris, and she has never been anywhere alone. In Iran the poets and strangers she meets tell her things that force her to face her own past: the Iranian father she assumed had abandoned her, and the question of what poetry is. Written and directed by Ann Marie Fleming and co-produced with the National Film Board of Canada, the animation was executive produced by Sandra Oh, who also voices a part. It was helped by an Indiegogo campaign that drew seven hundred and thirty backers in twenty eight countries over fifty days. It showed at Annecy in June 2016.
