What Winter Soldier Is About
Between 31 January and 2 February 1971, in Detroit, soldiers back from Vietnam gave evidence for three days. Close to thirty of them spoke on camera at hearings organised by Vietnam Veterans Against the War, describing acts they had committed or witnessed, inflated body counts, and how a village was destroyed. The film is the record of those sessions and nothing more: no narrator, no commentary laid over it, only faces and what was said. It was shot by a group of twenty filmmakers working as the Winterfilm Collective, among them Barbara Kopple, who would later make Harlan County USA. A young John Kerry is among those who testify.
